Bronze sculpture Judith dancing before the General of Bethulia, 19th century
Bronze sculpture with dark patina, representing Judith dancing before the General of Bethulia, of German origin, dating from the 19th century. The work bears the signature of H. Weisse, a 19th century German sculptor.
The sculpture is inspired by the book of Judith, a deuterocanonical text included in the Septuagint and the Old Testament of the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox confessions, but not present in the Jewish canon and considered apocryphal by Protestants. It tells the story of Judith, a Jewish widow who uses her beauty and cunning to assassinate an Assyrian general besieging her city, Bethulia, thus saving Jerusalem from annihilation.
Restoration in use.
