Majestic Renaissance Panel: Holy Family with St. John the Baptist – Workshop of Andrea del Sarto (16th C.) – 149x113 cm – XRF Analysis Certified

Introduction

We present this exceptional private Florentine devotional work, created in the first half of the 16th century in the prestigious workshop of Andrea del Sarto (1486–1530), one of the greatest interpreters of the mature Renaissance. The table, of impressive dimensions (149 x 113 cm), stands out for its classic composition, formal elegance and excellent state of conservation.

Subject and style

The work depicts the Virgin Mary dressed in traditional pink and blue colors, tenderly welcoming the Baby Jesus. To the viewer's left, key figures of the sacred kinship complete the scene: the elderly Saint Elizabeth, wrapped in brown robes with plastic drapery, and the young Saint John the Baptist, recognizable by the cross of reeds. The style is profoundly influenced by "Sartesque" grace: the figures are modeled by a diffused and soft light, the faces show an expressive sweetness typical of the Florentine school, and the landscape background with classical architecture offers spatial depth without distracting from the devotional centrality of the sacred group.

Attribution and executive quality

The work is attributed to the Bottega di Andrea del Sarto. Although there is no certainty that the panel was created directly by the master's hand, the panel demonstrates the high competence of his closest collaborators, capable of replicating the cartoons and style of the master with remarkable fidelity.

• Merits: The anatomical rendering of the hands and faces, the chromatic richness and the compositional complexity denote a high-ranking commission, probably intended for a private chapel or a patrician dressing room.

• Context: Works from the Sarto workshop are fundamental for understanding the diffusion of the Renaissance language in Florence and are increasingly sought after by the international market for their stability of attribution and aesthetic beauty.

Scientific Analysis and Authenticity

To support the chronological attribution, the work was subjected to non-invasive investigations using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). The results confirm:

1. Compatibility of Pigments: The presence of chemical elements (lead-tin, vermilion, azurite/lapis lazuli) consistent with the Florentine palette of the early sixteenth century.

2. Absence of Anachronisms: No detection of modern synthetic pigments (e.g. titanium white), excluding invasive repaintings or recent falsifications.

3. Material Integrity: The material structure meets the authenticity criteria for panel works of the period.

State of conservation

The wooden board appears structurally stable. The pictorial film retains excellent chromatic vibrancy, protected by an ancient varnish which bears witness to the passing of the centuries without excessively opaqueing the image. The golden frame with blue details, although from a later period (probably 19th century), harmoniously integrates the work, enhancing its preciousness.
