Mahogany coffee table, of Roman provenance, 19th century.

Antique mahogany coffee table, of Roman provenance, dating from the 19th century. The circular table top is made of various antique marbles with the entire mahogany support formed by a stem connected to a stylised star-shaped base, resting on supports carved in the shape of a lion's paw. This delightful artefact represents a fine decorative example, dating back to the period of the Grand Tour, a term used to refer to the period throughout the 18th century when Europe, and especially Italy, was a privileged destination for men of letters, artists and young noblemen interested in immersing themselves in the culture, art and antiquity of the Belpaese.
