These features rendered them ideal for deep gouge carving, yet endowed simultaneously with excellent dimensional stability and resistance to deformation. To counteract natural movements of the wood, the various cylindrical modules composing the shaft were assembled while taking care to alternate the direction of the grain and growth rings of the trunk.
