GIOVANNI FRANCESCO CASSANA 1654-1720
Oil painting on canvas, depicting 'farmyard animals with tambourine and flask', attributable to Giovanni Agostino Cassana. Son of the painter Giovanni Francesco Cassana, originally from Liguria, he was born around 1654 in Venice, where his father had moved following Bernardo Strozzi. Enrolled in the fraglia of Venetian painters from at least 1711, he followed his father's example.
Trained under his father together with his siblings Niccolò, Giovanni Battista and Maria Teresa, he began his career as a portrait painter, later establishing himself as a renowned animal painter. He served the Duchess of Guastalla Maria Vittoria Gonzaga and later the Florentine court, thanks to his brother Niccolò's friendship with Ferdinando de' Medici.
In 1718 he moved to Genoa, where he died in 1720.
Restoration in use.
