ELISABETTA MARCHIONNI

ELISABETTA MARCHIONNI

A pair of oil paintings on canvas by Elisabetta Marchioni (17th - 18th century Rovigo). The first painting depicts tulips, roses, chrysanthemums and other flowers in an urn, in a basket and on a stone shelf, with a landscape in the background; the second depicts tulips, roses and other flowers in an urn next to a garland of mixed flowers on a stone shelf, with a landscape beyond. We express our gratitude to Gianluca Bocchi for confirming the attribution and for his support in cataloguing.

Elisabetta Marchionni's origins are shrouded in mystery, and biographer Francesco Bartoli was the first to reveal this excellent artist to the world (see F. Bartoli, Le pitture, sculture ed architetture della città di Rovigo con indici ed illustrazioni, Venezia 1792). Bartoli describes her as '... a renowned flower painter with a delicate touch of the brush that sought to emulate nature...' (cf. op. cit. Bertoli, 1792, p. 318).

The two paintings in question are representative of his style in Rovigo, typical examples of the series of works that Bartoli mentions in his town's houses (see op. cit. Bertoli, 1792, p. 318).
