CESARE GENNARI 1637-1688

Oil painting on canvas, depicting a young lady, attributed to CESARE GENNARI 1637-1688.

The lady is dressed with aristocratic elegance. She wears a hairstyle typical of the second half of the 17th century. She is adorned with flowers and holds a rose in her left hand. pledge of love while in her right hand she holds a fan. The flowers and the presence of pearls around her neck allude to a wedding (maidens were not allowed to wear pearls)...... Excerpts of virtuosity in the depiction of fabrics stand out in the painting, the softness and meticulous workmanship of which the painter conveys. The most immediate comparison is with the portraits by Cesare Gennari who, not long ago, emerged as a painter of the Bolognese nobility and a refined author of paintings. Cesari Gennari was the nephew and most important continuer of Guercino's manner, and painted portraits very similar to this one, such as that of Laura Garzoni in the Pinacoteca di Budrio, dated 1676.
