Tuscan thurible 17th century
Tuscan thurible 17th century
Embossed copper thurible, originally from Tuscany and dated to the early 17th century. It has an architectural structure divided into two parts: the lower base is a hemisphere with geometric decorations in relief, while the upper part consists of a pointed circular lid. Three putti on the central base originally supported chains (now missing) to hang the thurible and keep the lid spaced out when used as an incense burner. The embossing technique used to make this object is an ancient method of working copper that involves the use of a hammer to create relief decorations.
