Pair of Obelisks from the Grand Tour period

Pair of Obelisks from the Grand Tour period

Pair of Obelisks made of brocatelle marble from Spain, of Roman origin. The obelisks consist of a square, moulded plinth base, where the pyramidal obelisk rests on spheres. This delightful artefact represents a fine decorative example, dating back to the period of the Grand Tour, a term used to refer to the period throughout the 18th century when Europe, and especially Italy, was a favoured destination for men of letters, artists and young noblemen interested in immersing themselves in the culture, art and antiquity of the Belpaese.
